October Updates from GRH OYD

SO HOW BAD IS CRIME IN THE TOWN?

Following a recent burglary in our area a member of the GRH Committee recently went along to the monthly meeting of the Town Ward police to check out what is the actual situation with crime in the area.

The Town Ward area includes the Palace Gardens Shopping Centre, Church Street and the general area known as The Town as well as the GRH area.

Below are the latest crime figures in the Town Ward area and it’s useful to be able to compare recent months. It’s interesting to note  that over a period of four months thefts from people have dropped by two thirds. The best news perhaps is that burglaries occur very infrequently.

We don’t know the details but a prolific shoplifter was recently prosecuted and has been banned from Enfield Town. He was also banned from riding a bicycle anywhere in England or Wales!

WHO WANTS TO BUY A TELEPHONE KIOSK?

Over two years ago the four Telephone kiosks on what is now called  Saddler’s Square on Church Street were stripped of their telephones and quickly fell into disrepair. About a year ago they were advertised For Sale as ‘business opportunities’ but nobody seemed interested enough to take on the challenge.

Then earlier this month Strettons, a Property Consultant and Advisory company put the Telephone Kiosks up for sale by Auction. Unfortunately the sale did not reach the reserve price of £28,000.

Meanwhile the bright red but increasingly grubby telephone kiosks stay where they have been for almost fifty years.

COUNCIL TALKS LITTER

Councillor Michael Rye, one of the three Councillors  responsible for the area that includes GRH recently contacted  Lisa Smart, Head of Urban Green Spaces at Enfield Council.

He had been contacted by some residents who had concerns about litter collection and full or overflowing bins. Lisa Smart made a number of points including:

·      There are regular problems with the size of litter bins

·      The Council are currently looking at bins that would have greater capacity

·      There are increasing volumes of waste across Enfield

·      Gentleman’s Row is cleansed three times a week (Monday, Wednesday and Friday)

·      All litter bins will be emptied and litter removed on each visit by the Street Cleansing Dept.

Lisa Smart also made comments about Town Park and Chase Side Green including, ‘Encroaching brambles around seating will also be tackled’.

THEATRE ON YOUR DOORSTEP

An immersive production of Nick Payne's iconic two-hander play, Constellations will be staged at Clarendon Cottage on Gentleman’s Row this October, starring LAMDA graduates Adelaide Leonard and Daniel Wallentine.

Constellations tells the story of physicist Marianne and her beekeeper husband, Roland as they navigate how their relationship is impacted by a devastating diagnosis. This intimate staging draws out the play's themes of love, free will and cosmology making for a truly unique audience experience.

Show dates 17th October, 18th October
